FIRST EVER FULL PAGE DB PRESS AD IS 50 “Me, I’m fresh on your pages...” The first ever David Bowie full-page press advert appeared fifty years ago today (2nd August 1969), in the American trade magazine, Billboard. Not the most exciting advert visually, but it conveyed the message well enough. The folks at Mercury were serious about their new boy and they wanted to show it. This was in celebration of the release of the Space Oddity 45 on Mercury in the US, and it was certainly a lot more than Philips in the UK were doing to promote the new record at this point. If you think you know of an earlier David Bowie full-page press advert, published anywhere in the world, please let us know about it. #DBAOTW

STAY TUNED FOR THE MOON AND MORE “And it was stalking time for the MOONboys...” Back in January we posted a piece, by our friend Unkle Rupert, regarding the 10th anniversary of WriterDirector Duncan Jones' film MOON. This month sees the 10th anniversary of the film going on general release and that event was celebrated by the release of a new 2 disc 10th Anniversary 4K UHD Blu-ray, featuring brand new content on the 4K UHD disc. Stay tuned for a MOON flavoured update from Unkle Rupert, including other exciting Duncan Jones news. Meanwhile, just for fun, today's montage features four things related to the film in one way or another. Can you tell us what the connections are? #MOONfilm #MOONfilm10

DENIS O’REGAN OPENS GALLERY IN HAMMERSMITH “I'd like to launch a gallery, Put you all inside my show...” On the evening that the UK recorded its hottest day ever (Thursday 25th July), the new @thedenisoregan Gallery W6 was successfully launched in London. Here’s a bit of info: As one of Britain’s top rock photographers, Denis O’Regan has collaborated with legendary artists including David Bowie, Queen and the Rolling Stones, creating iconic images and capturing both the grit and the glamour of rock star life. His illustrious 45 year career has seen him serve as official photographer at international festivals such as Glastonbury, Download & Coachella, and on tour for legendary performers including Duran Duran, Thin Lizzy, Spandau Ballet and Pink Floyd. Many of Denis’s iconic images will be shown at the gallery - David Bowie in Thailand & Singapore, Freddie Mercury and Queen at Wembley Stadium and their final ever show, at Knebworth, and Spandau Ballet and Pink Floyd images from their international tours. Long before drones were used for crowd shots, Denis took his life in his hands and climbed the scaffolding at Milton Keynes Bowl for his famous shot of David Bowie’s Serious Moonlight show, capturing the 63,000 audience of smiling faces as far as the eye could see. And now, for the first time ever, he’s bringing this entire rock & roll archive under one roof with the opening of the Denis O’Regan Gallery in Hammersmith. MAJOR TOM FLOATS ON AS THE APOLLO 11 CREW SPLASHDOWN “My mama said to get things done, You'd better not mess with Major Tom...” Unlike Space Oddity’s anti-hero, Major Tom, the crew of Apollo 11 completed a successful mission with a safe splashdown on this day (24th July) in 1969. Of course, Major Tom’s fate is not fully explained in Space Oddity, having lost contact with Ground Control his final words in the song are: “Here am I floating round my tin can, Far above the Moon, Planet Earth is blue, And there's nothing I can do.” However, Bowie continued to shed light on the fate of the Major throughout his career, most notably in Ashes To Ashes: “Ashes to ashes, funk to funky, We know Major Tom’s a junky, Strung out in heaven’s high, Hitting an all-time low.” Following the release of the original single, Bowie was quick to point out his true feelings about Major Tom and how the character had possibly been misinterpreted in some quarters...but more of that later. The new David Bowie video for Space Oddity (2019 mix) features footage of a performance of Space Oddity at his 50th birthday concert at Madison Square Garden in 1997 (directed by Tim Pope), married to footage shot and directed by Édouard Lock (the founder and choreographer of the Montreal dance troupe La La La Human Steps), for the onscreen back drop of Bowie’s 1990 Sound & Vision tour. The images here are from the latter. View the new David Bowie video for Space Oddity (2019 mix) here: https:youtu.beptVbk7r4IcA (Temp link on main page) #SpaceOddity50 #Apollo50th

SPACE ODDITY AND APOLLO 11 HEAD FOR SUCCESS “Here am I sitting in a tin can, Far above the world…” Though the early signs weren't looking so good for Space Oddity on 17th July, 1969, Apollo 11 was well on its way to a successful mission following a perfect lift off the previous day. Even with the BBC’s use of Space Oddity as unofficial theme song for the Apollo 11 mission, it would be a few more months before the single would peak on the UK singles chart. However, the crew of Apollo 11 would land successfully on the moon on 20th July 1969, an event being celebrated with a new David Bowie video which will be premiered at the NASA event at The Kennedy Center in Washington on 20th July. #SpaceOddity50

BOWIE FAN FOCUS 5: Mark Wardel Our fitth Bowie Fan Focus is on Mark Wardel. The pictures here are partly explained in the heavily edited excerpt below. + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + ~ Most valuable Bowie possession you own on an emotional level? MW: The hand written letter Bowie sent me from Berlin in June 1979 (See montage) ...I couldn't believe my eyes when I unexpectedly received it at the Soho advertising agency where I had recently got my first job in London as a junior illustrator. I had taken one of the Bowie artworks I had made at art school to Capital Radio where Bowie was doing an interview in the hope of meeting him and giving him my painting and was hanging out with the hundreds of fans milling about outside the building. One of the fans introduced me to Bowie's lovely American PR lady, Barbara DeWitt, who told me that she thought the picture was great but that Bowie would not be coming out as they were frightened there would be a riot if he did and that she would put the picture in the boot of his car and make sure he got it. This was thrilling enough for me and I soon forgot about it until a few months later when this mysterious air mail letter arrived at my work address. I'm still incredibly touched that David Bowie at the height of his fame, in Berlin, took the time to write me a thank you letter...even writing the envelope himself and presumably also licking the stamp! This is my most prized possession and something I would never consider selling. + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + Read the full thing here, Mark has a great story to tell: https:smarturl.itBFF05DBFB (Temp link on main page) #BowieFanFocus

ONE GIANT STEP – DAVID BOWIE’S SPACE ODDITY ON R2 TONIGHT “Do you remember a guy that's been, In such an early song...” Though not officially sanctioned, Tris Penna and Sue Clark’s latest Bowie-related production for BBC Radio 2 airs at 21:00 this evening, and is well worth a mention here. We’re sure you remember their award-winning Exploring Life On Mars? documentary, presented by Martin Kemp and originally broadcast on BBC Radio 2 on January 9th, 2017. The programme won the BBC’s Radio & Music Awards BEST MUSIC PRODUCTION gong last year. Tonight’s look at the evolution of Space Oddity and the continuing saga of Major Tom is surely destined for similar accolades.
